Hungary's second-largest city, home to the Great Reformed Church and a gateway to Hortobágy National Park. Sitting in the heart of the Great Plain (puszta), it is where Hungary's independence was declared. The August Flower Carnival's spectacular parade and the autumn crane migration at Hortobágy are key draws — a place to experience Hungarian traditions without big-city crowds.
Best Season
May to September is the prime season. August's Flower Carnival is Debrecen's biggest event, and autumn brings the crane migration at Hortobagy.
