Overview
Built in 1235 by Norman knight Meiler de Bermingham, Athenry preserves one of Ireland's most intact original Norman walled-town layouts. A three-story square keep forms the centerpiece, with sections of the town walls and some of its five gates still standing. The town also inspired the beloved Irish ballad 'The Fields of Athenry,' famously sung by fans at rugby and football matches. Admission about EUR 5. About 20 minutes from Galway by train.
