Overview
Built in 1618 by the Earl of Clanricarde, Richard de Burgh, Portumna Castle exemplifies Ireland's early semi-fortified great houses, bridging medieval castle and early-modern mansion styles. An 1826 fire badly damaged the interior, but the exterior and geometric gardens have been restored. The nearby Portumna Forest Park has a deer park with native red deer and walking trails along Lough Derg. Admission about EUR 5. About 1 hour from Galway by car.
