Overview
Built in 1868 by wealthy businessman Mitchell Henry for his wife Margaret, the abbey has housed Benedictine nuns since 1920. Set against Connemara's mountains and lakes, the Victorian Gothic Revival building's reflection in the lake is one of Ireland's most photographed scenes. The 6-acre Victorian Walled Garden lies a 20-minute walk away, and the nuns' handmade chocolates and jams are locally famous. Admission about EUR 17 (gardens included). About 1 hour 15 minutes from Galway by car.
