Overview
Built in 1520 by the O'Hynes clan, this classic west-of-Ireland tower house sits on a small inlet of Galway Bay, making for a picture-perfect scene. Named after the 7th-century King Guaire of Connacht, it was owned in the early 20th century by surgeon-poet Oliver St. John Gogarty, who hosted literary gatherings with Yeats and George Bernard Shaw. Summer evenings feature medieval-costumed banquets with a four-course meal and Irish literary recitals. Admission about EUR 8; medieval banquet about EUR 60. About 30 minutes from Galway by car.
