Overview
The former estate of Lady Augusta Gregory, patron of the Irish Literary Revival - the house itself was demolished in 1941, but the 1,000-acre woods and lake survive as a nature park. The park inspired W.B. Yeats's poem 'The Wild Swans at Coole,' and the garden's famous 'Autograph Tree' still bears initials carved by literary figures of the era, including Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and Sean O'Casey. Paired with nearby Thoor Ballylee (Yeats's actual home), it's a popular literary pilgrimage. Free entry (paid parking). About 30 minutes from Galway by car.
