Overview
The Elephanta Caves, located on Elephanta Island (Gharapuri) about 10km offshore from Mumbai, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved from basalt rock between the 5th and 8th centuries, the complex of seven cave temples is headlined by the 6m-tall Trimurti sculpture in the main cave — a masterpiece of Indian rock-cut art depicting Shiva's three aspects of creation, preservation, and destruction. The sculpture reveals different expressions depending on your viewing angle. About 1 hour by ferry from the Gateway of India. Return ferry about INR 200; cave admission INR 600 for foreigners.
