Overview
The Kanheri Caves are a complex of 109 Buddhist rock-cut caves carved into basalt cliffs between the 1st century BCE and 10th century CE, located within Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Elaborately carved prayer halls (chaityas), monastic cells (viharas), Buddha statues, and stupas survive, vividly illustrating ancient Indian Buddhist monastic culture. Included in the national park entry fee; reach the caves from the park entrance by bus or on foot.
Travel Tips
It's a fair walk from the park entrance to the caves, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Watch for slippery paths in the monsoon.
