Overview
Built in 1924 during the British era, the Gateway of India is a 26 m arched monument facing the Arabian Sea. Erected to commemorate the visit of King George V, it is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture. It was also the symbolic site through which the last British troops departed India in 1947. Together with the adjacent Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, it is the defining landmark of Mumbai. Free admission. About 10 minutes by taxi from Churchgate/CST Station.
