Kishiwada Castle

Kishiwada, Osaka

Overview

Built in the 14th century and used as the seat of the Kishiwada domain during the Edo period, Kishiwada Castle's current keep is a 1954 reinforced-concrete reconstruction. Inside the grounds, the 1953 'Hachijin-no-zu Garden' is a dry-landscape garden whose unique stone arrangement, inspired by an ancient Chinese military formation diagram, is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The castle is also the stage for the fierce September float festival 'Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri.' About 30 minutes south of central Osaka, it makes for a peaceful, less-crowded visit. Admission JPY 300. A 10-minute walk from Kishiwada Station (Nankai Main Line).
