Overview
Said to have been founded in 211, Sumiyoshi-taisha is one of Osaka's oldest shrines and the head shrine of roughly 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. Enshrining deities of the sea and navigation, it has long been venerated by sailors and merchants, and its four main halls, built in the pre-Buddhist native 'Sumiyoshi-zukuri' style, are designated National Treasures. The vermilion Taiko-bashi arched bridge is the shrine's iconic photo spot. It ranks among the most-visited shrines in the Kansai region during New Year's hatsumode. Free admission. A 3-minute walk from Sumiyoshi-taisha Station (Nankai Main Line).
