Overview
Shitenno-ji, founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, is Japan's first state-sponsored Buddhist temple, with around 1,400 years of history. The 'Shitenno-ji style' layout — middle gate, five-story pagoda, main hall, and lecture hall on a single axis — is Japan's oldest temple plan and is believed to have been influenced by Korea's Baekje kingdom. On the 21st and 22nd of each month, the lively Honko-koh flea market fills the grounds with antiques and street food. The nearby thousand-year-old Gokuraku-jodo Garden is perfect for quiet contemplation. Free admission (central precinct JPY 300). A 5-minute walk from Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka Station (Tanimachi Line).
