Overview
Founded in 949, Osaka Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the Heian-era scholar revered as the god of learning. Students and exam-takers visit constantly to pray for academic success, and the shrine connects directly to Tenjinbashi-suji, Osaka's longest shopping arcade, for post-visit shopping. Held every July 24-25, the Tenjin Matsuri ranks among Japan's three great festivals alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri, featuring a spectacular boat procession of hundreds of vessels on the river. Free admission. A 3-minute walk from Minami-Morimachi Station (Tanimachi Line).
Travel Tips
During exam season, the shrine gets busy with visitors buying good-luck charms and ema plaques. During Tenjin Matsuri, reserve riverside viewing seats in advance.
