Overview
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe stands below the hill where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the indigenous Juan Diego in 1531, making it the heart of Mexican Catholic faith and one of the world's most-visited shrines by annual attendance. The modern circular basilica, completed in 1976, preserves and displays Saint Juan Diego's cloak bearing the Virgin's image, while the old basilica remains visibly tilted from subsidence. Every December 12, millions of pilgrims flock here, many climbing the hill on their knees. Free admission. Metro Line 6 La Villa-Basilica station.
