Overview
Built in 1772, Bonfim Church (Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim) is Salvador's most famous church and is renowned for its wish ribbons (fitas). Tying colorful ribbons to the church railings while making wishes is a symbolic Salvador tradition. The legend says that if you tie a ribbon around your wrist with three knots while making three wishes, your wishes will come true when the ribbon eventually wears away. The January Bonfim festival is Salvador's largest religious event.
Opening Hours
Tue-Sat 06:30-12:00 and 14:00-17:00; Sun 06:30-12:00.
Travel Tips
Buy a fita ribbon at the entrance and tie it to the railing while making a wish. The Washing of Bonfim festival, held on the second Thursday of January, is well worth joining.
