Overview
Feira de São Joaquim is Salvador's largest traditional open-air market, located in the lower city, and the most vivid place to experience the Afro-Brazilian culture that UNESCO has recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Tropical fruits, seafood, spices, palm oil (dendê), cassava flour, and Candomblé religious items — the essential ingredients of Bahian culture — are all gathered here. It's a local market (not tourist-oriented), so it's crowded and chaotic, but it's where you feel Salvador's true soul.
Opening Hours
Mon-Sat 06:00-18:00, Sun 06:00-12:00.
Travel Tips
Visit in the morning for the most lively atmosphere. Minimize valuables and carry small bills. Visiting with a local guide allows for a deeper experience.
