Overview

Farol da Barra is a lighthouse atop the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra, built around 1534, and is known as South America's oldest lighthouse site. The original modest lighthouse installed in 1696 was replaced in 1839 by the current 22m tower, manufactured in England. Inside the fort, the Nautical Museum of Bahia displays artifacts submerged for over 300 years, navigation history, and exhibits on the slave trade. The sunset viewed from the rocks behind the fort is considered Salvador's finest, drawing crowds of locals and tourists at dusk. Admission is R$15 for adults, R$7.50 for students, teachers, and seniors.
