Overview
Terreiro de Jesus, named after the Jesuits who first settled here in the 1550s, is the historic plaza at the entrance to Pelourinho, facing the Sé Cathedral and flanked by the São Domingos and São Pedro dos Clérigos churches. In 1948, landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx redesigned it with black-and-white Portuguese mosaic paving using shells and beach pebbles, with a statue of the Roman goddess Ceres crowning the central fountain. It's a cultural stage where capoeira performances, wish-ribbon (fita) vendors, and baianas selling acarajé can be found throughout the day. Admission is free.
