Overview
Itapuã Beach, north of Salvador's city center, is a palm-fringed beach made famous by bossa nova poet Vinícius de Moraes, who settled here and fell in love with the area shortly after writing 'The Girl from Ipanema.' Its calm emerald waters and natural reef pools make it great for family swimming, and the Itapuã Lighthouse and the protected Parque das Dunas (sand dune park) are nearby highlights. The 'Rua da Música' (Music Street), where Salvador's artists and musicians gathered in the 1970s-80s, remains a hangout for surfers and stand-up paddlers today. Admission is free.
