Museu Afro-Brasileiro (MAFRO)

Terreiro de Jesus, Salvador

Overview

Museu Afro-Brasileiro (MAFRO) occupies the former Faculty of Medicine building of the Federal University of Bahia on Terreiro de Jesus square and is Salvador's premier museum of Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage. Its centerpiece is a collection of wooden orixá (Candomblé deity) carvings by Nigerian sculptor Carybé, displayed alongside African traditional garments, instruments, pottery, and ritual objects. The building's façade still bears anatomical relief carvings from its medical school days, creating a striking contrast. Admission is R$6 and includes the adjacent Archaeology and Ethnology Museum. Reachable on foot within the Pelourinho district.
