Overview
Mercado Modelo, originally a customs house built in 1861, is Salvador's largest craft and souvenir market, located right in front of the Lacerda Elevator in the lower city. Over 200 shops sell traditional Bahian crafts, lace, capoeira instruments (berimbau), Afro-Brazilian religious items, clothing, and jewelry. Capoeira performances frequently take place at the market entrance, and bargaining is part of the fun.
Opening Hours
Mon-Sat 09:00-19:00, Sun 09:00-14:00.
Travel Tips
Bargain actively — you can typically negotiate down to 50-60% of the asking price. It's more fun when capoeira performers are present.
