Overview
The Church of Our Lady of Rosário dos Pretos, on Largo do Pelourinho, was built by a brotherhood of enslaved Africans in the 18th century, at a time when Black worshippers were barred from white congregations — a space of faith the community built for itself. Every Tuesday at 6pm, the 'Missa dos Pretos' blends Catholic liturgy with atabaque drum rhythms and Afro-Brazilian hymns, a singular expression of Salvador's religious and cultural fusion. Despite its modest façade, the interior is richly decorated in Baroque style. Entry is free, with donations encouraged.
