Denis Gardens (Denisovy sady)

Petrov, Brno

Overview

Established between 1814 and 1818, this is the oldest public park in the Czech lands. Originally called Františkov, it was renamed in 1919 in honor of French historian Ernest Denis, a supporter of Czechoslovak independence. Laid out on the southern slope of Petrov Hill beneath the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, it still features an obelisk commemorating the end of the Napoleonic Wars, a colonnade, and a fountain. The Husova viewpoint terrace offers a panorama stretching from Špilberk Castle to the AZ Tower in the south, and on clear days you can see Pálava Hill 40 km away. Free and open. 10-minute walk from Freedom Square.
