Overview
First built in the 13th century and used as the actual town hall until 1935, this is Brno's oldest secular building. The highlight is the Gothic entrance portal (1510) by architect Anton Pilgram, and the passageway beneath the tower is home to the legends of the 'Brno Dragon' (actually a stuffed crocodile) and the 'wheel.' The crooked pinnacle above the portal is said to be Pilgram's revenge for not being paid the agreed fee. Climb 173 steps up the lookout tower for a sweeping view of Brno. Tower admission roughly CZK 50-90 for adults (details may change — check before visiting). Easily accessible on foot between Freedom Square and the Vegetable Market.
Travel Tips
Tickets are sold only at the tower entrance, so don't look elsewhere. The stairs are narrow and steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
