Overview
Spread over 92 km² near the town of Blansko, about 30 km north of Brno, this is one of Europe's largest karst regions with over 1,100 caves and gorges. Of the five caves open to the public, Punkva Caves is the star attraction: after roughly a kilometer on foot, visitors board a motorboat for a ride along the underground Punkva River. The 138.5m-deep Macocha sinkhole takes its name from a legend about a stepmother who threw her stepson into the abyss, and a cable car climbs to a viewpoint at the rim. Tour about CZK 180-210. About 30-40 minutes from Brno by car, or take the train to Blansko and continue by bus.
Travel Tips
Very popular — online advance booking is essential. The caves stay a cool 8-10°C year-round, so bring a jacket, and photography is banned during the boat section.
