Overview
Discovered in 1935 on a hillside south of Kerteminde Fjord, this circa-925 Viking ship burial is Denmark's only known example of burial inside a ship. Though the actual wood has mostly decayed, the ship's iron rivets remain in its original shape, and the graves of 11 horses and at least 4 dogs found alongside suggest an elaborate send-off for a chieftain-level figure. A modern exhibition building now stands over the burial mound, letting visitors view the preserved grave through glass exactly as excavated. About 20km from central Odense, making it a good half-day trip. Admission about DKK 80 (details may change). About 30 minutes from Odense by bus or car.
