Areopagus Hill

Acropolis, Athens

Overview

A low marble outcrop just west of the Acropolis, the Areopagus once served as ancient Athens's supreme court, hearing murder trials. Greek myth holds it took its name - 'Hill of Ares' - from the war god's own trial here. The Apostle Paul reportedly preached to the Athenians here around AD 51, an episode recorded in the Book of Acts, making it a pilgrimage site too. The rock is smooth and worn with no railings or steps, so climb carefully, but the free summit view over the Acropolis, Agora, and city skyline is one of the best in Athens. Free entry. 2-minute walk from the Acropolis entrance.

Travel Tips

The rock is very slippery, so wear sneakers. Visit around sunset when the Acropolis lights come on for a magical view.
