Overview
Known as the 'Hill of the Muses', this pine-covered hill faces the Acropolis to the west. Its summit is crowned by a marble monument built around AD 116 honoring Philopappos, a Roman senator and Athenian citizen. Nearby lie the so-called Prison of Socrates and the Pnyx, the ancient meeting place of Athenian democracy. Shaded by trees, it's pleasant to walk even in summer, and the panorama from the top - taking in the Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf - makes it a favorite sunset spot. Free entry. About a 15-minute walk southwest of the Acropolis.
Travel Tips
Visit at sunset for a front-row view of the Acropolis glowing gold. Combine it with a stop at the Pnyx ruins.
