Overview
Perched on the southernmost cape of the Attica peninsula about 70km south of Athens, this Temple of Poseidon dates to around 440 BC. Fifteen Doric marble columns survive, and legend has it that King Aegeus leapt from these cliffs into the sea awaiting his son Theseus's return. The poet Lord Byron famously carved his name into one of the columns. Sunset over the Aegean from these sheer cliffs is one of Greece's great spectacles, framing the temple's silhouette beautifully. Admission about EUR 10. About 2 hours from Athens by bus or organized tour.
