Overview
Once home to Athens's potters (kerameis), this was also the city's largest ancient cemetery, in use from the 6th century BC. It sits where the Sacred Way and the Panathenaic route crossed, and tradition holds this is where Pericles delivered his funeral oration. Excavations have uncovered marble grave stelae with fine reliefs and pottery, along with remains of the Dipylon Gate and Sacred Gate, part of the city walls. An on-site museum displays grave goods and sculpture. Admission about EUR 8 (included in the Acropolis combined ticket). 5-minute walk from Metro Thiseio (Lines 1/3).
