Overview
Standing in the middle of Ermou, Athens's main shopping street, this 11th-century Byzantine church is among the oldest surviving in the city. Built in the typical Middle Byzantine cross-in-square style, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Kapnikarea). It narrowly escaped demolition during the 1834 urban redevelopment when Bavarian King Otto ordered it preserved. Today it serves as the chapel of the University of Athens and holds Byzantine-style murals painted by 20th-century artist Photis Kontoglou.
