Overview
Founded in 1930 when Greek businessman and collector Antonis Benakis donated his mansion and lifetime collection to the state, this is Athens's oldest private museum. Its holdings span Greek cultural history from prehistoric artifacts to Byzantine icons, Ottoman-era Greek costumes, relics of the Greek War of Independence, and two early El Greco paintings. The Neoclassical mansion itself is beautiful, and the rooftop cafe overlooks the National Garden. Admission about EUR 12 (free evening entry on Thursdays). 5-minute walk from Metro Evangelismos (Line 3).
