Overview
This 15-hectare park was created in 1839 at the order of Queen Amalia, Greece's first queen, originally as a royal garden stocked with over 500 plant species gathered from across the Mediterranean. Ponds, a small zoo, Roman-era mosaic remains, and a bust of Greece's first female poet are tucked throughout, and its shaded paths offer welcome relief from Athens's summer heat. At the garden's southern edge stands the Neoclassical Zappeion Hall, completed in 1888 and still host to political and cultural events. Free entry. 5-minute walk from Metro Syntagma (Lines 2/3).
Travel Tips
Shaded paths make it a great midday escape from summer heat. The cafes around Zappeion Hall are a nice place to rest.
