Overview
The square where Greece's Constitution was proclaimed in 1843 - 'Syntagma' is Greek for 'constitution.' The 19th-century Bavarian-era royal palace stands on the east side and now serves as the Greek Parliament. In front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Evzone guards in traditional dress - the white kilt-like fustanella and pom-pom tsarouchia shoes - change every hour on the hour; the grand changing on Sunday at 11:00 features the full guard. The square sits within walking distance of Plaka, Ermou shopping street, and the National Garden, making it an ideal starting point for exploring Athens. Free entry. Right at Metro Syntagma (Lines 2/3).
