Overview
Built in the 1st century BC under Roman rule, this new commercial hub succeeded the Ancient Agora as Athens's marketplace. Its star attraction is the Tower of the Winds, an octagonal marble tower from around 50 BC carved with reliefs of the eight wind gods and equipped with sundials, a water clock, and a wind vane - regarded as the world's first weather station. During Ottoman times it even served as a Sufi lodge. Admission about EUR 8 (included in the Acropolis combined ticket). 3-minute walk from Metro Monastiraki (Lines 1/3).
Travel Tips
You can admire the Tower's shape from outside, but buy a ticket to see inside. Easy to combine with a stroll through nearby Plaka.
