Overview
Originally built as Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum, this building was converted into a Catholic cathedral in the 7th century, making it one of the oldest cathedral buildings in the world. An octagonal Roman structure is topped by a 13th-century Romanesque bell tower, which visitors can climb for sweeping views of Split and the Adriatic. Inside, find 13th-century wooden doors, a Baroque altar, and relics of St. Domnius. Cathedral admission about EUR 5 (with bell tower about EUR 8). 1-minute walk from the Peristyle.
Opening Hours
08:00-19:00 (shorter in winter; limited access during mass)
Travel Tips
Climbing the bell tower offers Split's best view. The stairs are narrow and steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
