Overview
Built within the Diocletian's Palace complex in the late 3rd or early 4th century, this Roman temple originally honored Jupiter, the supreme Roman god. Its ornate Corinthian columns and vaulted ceiling are notable, and an Egyptian sphinx statue at the entrance underscores the vastness of the Roman Empire. Converted into a Catholic baptistery in the Middle Ages, it still serves that purpose today, housing a bronze statue of St. John the Baptist by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Admission about EUR 3 (sometimes bundled with a Peristyle combo ticket). 1-minute walk from Peristyle Square.
Travel Tips
Don't miss the sphinx statue at the entrance. Tall visitors should mind the low ceiling.
