Overview
Built in 305 as Emperor Diocletian's retirement residence, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the finest examples of late Roman architecture. Today homes, shops and restaurants fill its walls, earning it the title of a 'living monument.' Highlights include the Peristyle, the Cathedral of St. Domnius (originally the emperor's mausoleum) and the underground halls, which also appeared in Game of Thrones as the dungeon where Daenerys' dragons were chained. Palace exterior free (underground halls about EUR 7). 5-minute walk from Split train station.
Opening Hours
Palace grounds: open 24 hours; underground halls: 08:30-21:00 (shorter in winter)
Travel Tips
The underground halls require a separate ticket. On summer evenings, free performances are sometimes held in the Peristyle.
