Overview
Built in 1854 by the Habsburgs to keep watch over the city after suppressing the 1848 revolution, this fortress crowns Gellert Hill at 235m. Beside it stands the 14m Liberty Statue, erected to commemorate the end of WWII, holding a palm branch aloft over the Danube. The summit offers a sweeping panorama of Buda Castle, Parliament, and the Chain Bridge, making it a favorite sunset spot. Free to enter (some viewing areas charge a small fee). Reachable by bus 27.
