Bab el-Mellah

Medina West, Chefchaouen

Overview

Bab el-Mellah is one of several gates piercing Chefchaouen's medina walls, its name reflecting its role as the historic passage into the district once inhabited by the city's Jewish community (mellah). Settled from the city's founding in the 15th century by Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal, the quarter has largely become ordinary housing today, but the gate's arched structure and thick stone walls preserve traces of the old fortified town. The narrow, winding lanes beyond the gate are far quieter than the tourist-heavy center, offering a glimpse of everyday local life. Free entry. Western medina wall.

Travel Tips

The alleys beyond the gate are quiet residential lanes - walk respectfully. Combine with the Jewish Cemetery and the Moulay Ali Mausoleum on a western-medina route.
