Overview
Plaza Uta el-Hammam is the roughly 5,000-square-meter heart of Chefchaouen's medina, flanked on one side by the red-earth Kasbah and on the other by the Grand Mosque with its famous octagonal minaret. Cafes and restaurant terraces line the square, making it the perfect spot to sip mint tea while admiring both monuments. In the evening, local families fill the plaza to stroll and let kids run, giving it a warmly lived-in feel. Nearly every itinerary in Chefchaouen revolves around this square. Free entry. From the terrace of Cafe Sofia in the corner, mint tea with the Kasbah straight ahead is unbeatable. The Grand Mosque is closed to non-Muslims - admire the exterior and minaret only.
