Overview
The Rif Mountains encircling Chefchaouen stretch roughly 350 kilometers across northern Morocco, and several viewpoints along the hillside paths outside the city offer sweeping views of the blue-roofed medina set against layer upon layer of ridgelines. From higher vantage points beyond the Spanish Mosque or Ras el-Maa waterfall, the Mediterranean Sea can sometimes be glimpsed on a clear day. The Rif is also known for its cedar and fir forests and cannabis cultivation, so the walk offers distinctive scents and vegetation along the way. Free entry. Hillside paths on the outskirts of the medina.
