Overview
Chefchaouen's city walls were built as the town was founded in 1471, combining rammed earth (pise) and stone to defend the fledgling settlement from Spanish and Portuguese attack, and substantial sections along the medina's western and southern edges survive close to their original form today. Several gates (bab) pierce the walls, linking the inside and outside of the medina, and walking along them reveals the city's overall scale and topography in a way the narrow interior alleys never show. The layered rammed-earth construction technique is well preserved, making the walls a valuable case study in Moroccan defensive architecture. Free entry (exterior walking route).
