Overview
This church was built for the Spanish community stationed in Chefchaouen during the Spanish protectorate era (1920-1956), and it's one of the few buildings that still testifies to Morocco's colonial-era history in the north. After Morocco's independence in 1956, most of the Spanish community left and the church ceased functioning as a place of worship, but its modest Spanish colonial facade remains, bearing witness to the city's layered history. Amid the medina's predominantly Islamic architecture, spotting this incongruous European-style building is its own small pleasure, a reminder that Chefchaouen has long been more than just the 'Blue City' - a crossroads of cultures.
