Moulay Ali ben Rachid Mausoleum

Medina, Chefchaouen

Overview

This mausoleum honors Moulay Ali ben Rachid, who founded Chefchaouen in 1471 as a refuge for Muslims and Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula during the Spanish Reconquista, and it remains a modest but revered pilgrimage site tucked into the medina's alleys. He is still honored today as the spiritual founder of the city. Its whitewashed dome and green trim stand out distinctly amid the blue medina lanes, and while non-Muslims cannot enter the inner prayer chamber, the exterior and the reverent atmosphere of the surrounding alleys make it worth a visit. Free to view from outside. Medina alleys near the Kasbah.
