Overview
This traditional village in southern Santorini preserves the island's largest and best-kept kastelli (fortress village) layout. Built by the Venetians in the 13th century to repel pirate raids, its houses are joined wall-to-wall in a defensive ring, an unusual and striking structure. Wandering the maze of narrow lanes and archways reveals old windmills, Byzantine churches, and traditional shops, and with far fewer tourists, it's considered one of the most authentic surviving villages on the island. The hill above offers island-wide views. Free to explore. About 20 minutes by bus from Fira.
Travel Tips
Public transit is limited - a rental car or ATV is the easiest way in. The maze of lanes is easy to get lost in, so allow extra time.
