Overview
This active volcanic islet sits at the center of the Santorini caldera, formed through repeated eruptions since first rising above sea level in 197 BC. Its most recent eruption was in 1950, and it remains classified as active. After landing by boat, a roughly 30-minute walk over black volcanic rock leads to the crater, where the smell of sulfur and rising steam are still present. The barren, almost lunar landscape - nearly devoid of trees or vegetation - offers a rare chance to experience geologically young volcanic terrain up close. Most visitors come as part of a caldera cruise tour. Admission about EUR 3 (tour cost separate).
