Overview
Santorini's capital and most vibrant village sits 260m above sea level on the caldera cliffs. Whitewashed walls and blue domes are as beautiful as in Oia, but the atmosphere is livelier with abundant shopping, dining, and nightlife. The Caldera Walk skirting the cliff edge offers prime sunset views as the volcanic cliffs glow gold, and the 587 zigzagging steps down to the old port can also be tackled by cable car (about EUR 6 one way) or donkey (about EUR 5 one way). The Prehistoric Thera Museum and Archaeological Museum display artifacts unearthed at Akrotiri. Free to visit. About 15 minutes by bus from Athinios ferry port.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (shops and restaurants typically 09:00-24:00)
Travel Tips
Cable car queues can be very long - head down early before ferry departures. The sunset is also great from the village of Firostefani just north.
