Overview
Perched at Santorini's highest point (about 300m), Pyrgos served as the island's capital until the 1800s. Traces of a Venetian-era fortress, a maze of narrow lanes, and whitewashed houses stacked in tiers preserve its medieval defensive town plan. Far fewer tourists visit than Oia or Fira, giving it an authentic local feel, and it's also the trailhead for a hike up to the Prophet Elias Monastery at the hilltop. Small churches and view-blessed cafes dot the village, perfect for a relaxed wander. Free to explore. About 15 minutes by bus from Fira.
