El Badi Palace

Kasbah, Marrakech

Overview

El Badi Palace was built over roughly 25 years starting in 1578 by Saadian sultan Ahmed al-Mansur, once decorated with gilded ceilings, Italian marble, and Indian onyx and known as the 'Palace of Wonder.' In the late 17th century, Alaouite ruler Moulay Ismail stripped its materials to build Meknes, leaving only the massive earthen ruins standing today, though the scale of its 360 rooms and vast courtyard pool still impresses. Storks nesting atop the walls are a signature sight, and the palace also displays the original 12th-century minbar (pulpit) from the Koutoubia Mosque. Admission MAD 70. Near Bahia Palace, about 20 minutes on foot from Jemaa el-Fnaa.
